Magic is an integral part of The Realm. Its effective use makes the difference between success and failure in the game. The player should learn all the spells, understand their use(s), and employ them correctly.
Success in The Realm involves two interrelated factors: power and economics. Power is the strength of the character in all facets; magic potency, health, equipment, and combat skills. Economics is, quite simply, cash flow. The two go hand-in-hand. To increase your power you need a positive cash flow, the more positive the better. To achieve a sound economic base you need to become more powerful. Sound like a Catch-22?
It's not so bad. Although it is true that to have one you need the other and to get the other you need the one, players can make headway - albeit slow - in either or both spheres without great reliance on the other. The first three levels where the new player does not lose any experience or possessions when killed is one example. Additionally, more advanced players who find themselves stuck can always hunt critters beneath the player's level and make slow, safe progress to that new skill. But to make solid, sound progress, you need a strong financial base.
One of the greatest drains on one's coffers is the repairing of damaged equipment. The better your equipment, the greater your power, and the higher the cost to repair. Fortunately there is a way to stop this drain. Indestruction.
Indestruction is a Grand Master Thaumaturgy spell which prevents the item it has been cast upon from taking damage for a period of time. It is one of the essential spells. All characters, of whatever class, ought learn it. Along the way to achieving Grand Master Thaumaturgy skill one also picks up several other highly useful spells: Greater Shield and Invulnerability (damage reducing spells and two more of the essentials), Banishment (for the quick removal of summoned creatures during combat), and Wrath of the Gods (a highly effective group attack spell against Evil creatures).
