Equipment

Success in the Realm is far easier with the proper equipment. At lower levels, equipment can make the difference between survival and curling up on the floor with a hefty experience point loss. On these pages you will find all the details on armor and weapons.

New players begin the game with some very basic equipment called newbie-wear. The exact items a character begins with depends on the class of the character, for example warriors are outfitted with newbie armor and an iron sword while wizards have newbie clothes and an iron dagger. As soon as possible the new player should seek to improve this equipment but do so wisely. See the article called Heavy Metal for a guide to what sort of equipment is most suitable and some advice on when to make the move.

One way to get better equipment is to acquire the aid of some more experienced player, one with a kind heart and deep pockets. There are many experienced players that are happy to donate equipment to new players. The trick is to find one without becoming a beggar. Many players get quickly annoyed by people begging for things. I am one of those players. Yet I have also outfitted new players who are complete strangers to me and whom I never expect to see again with a full set enchanted equipment. The trick to getting help is to ask nicely, without whining and without repeatedly making the request, i.e. begging. Ask on gossip channel 1 (General) but only ask once or twice. If anyone is in the mood to assist you they will speak up. If no one makes you an offer of assistance, move on. Try channel 0 (Newbie), many experienced players hang out on that channel with the idea of helping those new to the game. You can also wander around the towns and make requests for help but, again, do not become an annoyance. Ask once or twice on a screen and if no one offers to help then move on. A little patience and some good manners should eventually lead you to find a player who wishes to be of help.

There is a downside to getting equipment from someone else: You lose some of the fun and sense of adventure the game has to offer. There is a real sense of achievement in doing things for yourself and in earning your equipment through playing the game and taking some risks. I cannot over-emphasize this point. Whereas getting great equipment from a generous player will allow you to gain early levels far faster, if you are in The Realm to enjoy yourself by learning about the world and meeting its challenges then try to remain independent and earn your equipment for yourself.

However you go about getting your equipment, eventually you will want to get the best equipment available for your character. You should count on going through several items of interim equipment, i.e. items that are better than what you had but not yet as good as what you hope to have in the future. It is very rare to be given an Ultimate Equipment package by another player and completely impossible to gain it in one try by working toward it on your own. Keep your eyes open for any item that moves you closer to the Ultimate package.

Exactly what constitutes an Ultimate Equipment Set for a given character is matter of opinion (please feel free to send me your ideas on this) but, for what it is worth, I'll offer you my suggested ultimate equipment packages for each of the player classes:

Thieves

My thief uses two sets of equipment, one for normal use (hunting) and a second, lighter set for thieving. The light weight of the second set, combined with the high dexterity of the thief, allows one to almost always have the initiative on combat and therefore permits one to leave without taking much, if any, damage. Many experienced players skip the second set and simply go without armor altogether.
